Growing up in New York, Justin Tompkins, also known as X-Over, had a deep love for basketball. His idols were his older brother Jahmani “Hot Shot” Swanson and the legendary Allen Iverson. Raised by their mother, Sabrina Swanson, who instilled in them the values of hard work and perseverance, the brothers learned that dreams are achievable through dedication and overcoming challenges.
Swanson, who herself is a little person, became the shortest Harlem Globetrotter in the team’s history in 2017. Following in her footsteps, Tompkins joined the team in 2019, becoming the second shortest player at 4’5’’ and 4’6’’ feet. Together, they have traveled the world, inspiring children and others with dwarfism. Their success serves as a testament to the lessons instilled in them by their mother.
The Harlem Globetrotters are set to debut their first-ever sports residency, The Harlem Globetrotters Experience, at American Dream in New Jersey this August. The event will feature 16 live games from August 16 to August 25, showcasing the team’s incredible skills and entertainment. Being a member of the Globetrotters requires rigorous practice and skill development, something that Tompkins understands well.
Justin Tompkins attributes much of his success to his mother, who he describes as one of the most famous little persons in Harlem. She raised her sons to believe in themselves and to never back down from a challenge. Tompkins recalls a time when his mother stood up to a disrespectful cab driver, teaching him the importance of standing his ground in any situation.
Growing up in the Frederick Douglass projects, Tompkins and his brother faced their fair share of challenges and discrimination. However, watching his brother excel in streetball inspired Tompkins to pursue basketball himself. He soon became a local legend, captivating audiences with his skills and proving that size is no barrier to success.
Now in his fifth year as a Globetrotter, Tompkins continues to travel the world, playing the game he loves and inspiring others with his story. Beyond basketball, he is also passionate about boxing, wrestling, and giving back to his community. His goal is to open camps and programs for individuals with dwarfism, helping them pursue their dreams and make a positive impact.
In addition to his athletic pursuits, Tompkins also maintains a rigorous workout routine. His Killer X-Over Workout Plan includes exercises for chest, arms, back, and shoulders, emphasizing strength and conditioning. By following this routine and staying dedicated to his goals, Tompkins continues to push boundaries and show that anything is possible.
As Justin Tompkins continues to make a name for himself on and off the court, he remains committed to inspiring others and making a difference in his community. With the support of his family, especially his mother and brother, he is determined to leave a lasting legacy and show the world that with hard work and determination, anything is possible.
