Mark your calendars for the KIPRC-hosted Overdose Awareness Day event on August 28th

In a proactive effort to combat the ongoing drug overdose crisis, the Kentucky Injury Prevention and Research Center (KIPRC) is hosting an event in recognition of International Overdose Awareness Day. This event, scheduled for August 28th from noon to 2 p.m. in room 207 of the University of Kentucky College of Public Health (CPH), aims to raise awareness and provide essential resources to address the overdose epidemic. The event is open to university community members, including CPH students, staff, faculty, health care professionals, and anyone interested in overdose prevention.

Terry Bunn, the director of KIPRC, expressed excitement about bringing together the community and experts in the field to share vital information and resources that can potentially save lives. This event signifies KIPRC’s ongoing commitment to addressing the overdose epidemic and supporting those affected by substance use disorders.

The event will feature interactive tables on various topics related to overdose prevention. Attendees will have the opportunity to explore and gather information on critical resources and initiatives. One of the key topics that will be covered is administering Naloxone, an opioid overdose reversal medication. Demonstrations on how to administer Naloxone will be provided, equipping participants with the knowledge and skills needed in an overdose emergency.

Experts will also provide an overview of current drug overdose trends in Kentucky and across the nation, discussing factors contributing to the rise in overdose deaths and identifying populations most at risk. Additionally, attendees will learn about KIPRC’s innovative locator tool, FindHelpNowKY.org, which helps individuals find substance use disorder treatment, recovery housing, and mental health services with available openings.

The event will highlight local community resources and overdose prevention initiatives aimed at reducing the impact of the opioid crisis. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with KIPRC staff about research opportunities related to substance use prevention and treatment.

This event serves as a unique opportunity for the community to come together, learn about available resources, and explore ways to support those affected by substance use disorders. For more information and to learn how to get involved, individuals can visit KIPRC’s website at https://kiprc.uky.edu.

KIPRC, a partnership between the Kentucky Department for Public Health (DPH) and the University of Kentucky’s College of Public Health, serves as both an academic injury prevention research center and the DPH’s designee for statewide injury prevention and control. Through events like this, KIPRC continues to play a crucial role in addressing the overdose epidemic and supporting individuals impacted by substance use disorders.
